Kin Selection, Group Selection, and the Varieties of Population Structure
نویسنده
چکیده
Various results show the ‘formal equivalence’ of kin and group selectionist methodologies, but this does not preclude there being a real and useful distinction between kin and group selection processes. I distinguish individualand population-centred approaches to drawing such a distinction, and I proceed to develop the latter. On the account I advance, the differences between kin and group selection are differences of degree in the structural properties of populations. A spatial metaphor (‘K-G space’) provides a useful framework for thinking about these differences: kin and group selection may be conceptualized as large, overlapping regions of K-G space. I then consider some implications of the account, defend it from possible objections, and further argue that the structural features characteristic of both kin and group selection may recur at multiple levels of biological organization.

Kin and multilevel selection in social evolution: a never-ending controversy? [version 1; referees: 4 approved]
Kin selection and multilevel selection are two major frameworks in evolutionary biology that aim at explaining the evolution of social behaviors. However, the relationship between these two theories has been plagued by controversy for almost half a century and debates about their relevance and usefulness in explaining social evolution seem to rekindle at regular intervals. Here, we first provid...
متن کاملContinuous-time models of group selection, and the dynamical insufficiency of kin selection models.
Traditionally, the process of group selection has been described mathematically by discrete-time models, and analyzed using tools like the Price equation. This approach makes implicit assumptions about the process that are not valid in general, like the central role of synchronized mass-dispersion and group re-formation events. In many important examples (like hunter-gatherer tribes) there are ...
متن کاملStomatal Density as a Selection Criterion for Developing Tea Varieties with High Physiological Efficiency
Stomata, the small opening in leaf connecting plant with atmosphere, play pivotal roles in global water and carbon cycles. Stomata regulate the two key important physiological functions viz. photosynthesis and transpiration and thus are crucial for performance of crop species in changing climatic conditions. Although environmental factors influence the density and size of stomata, the genetic c...
متن کاملThe concurrent evolution of cooperation and the population structures that support it
The evolution of cooperation often depends upon population structure, yet nearly all models of cooperation implicitly assume that this structure remains static. This is a simplifying assumption, because most organisms possess genetic traits that affect their population structure to some degree. These traits, such as a group size preference, affect the relatedness of interacting individuals and ...
متن کاملFeature Selection in Structural Health Monitoring Big Data Using a Meta-Heuristic Optimization Algorithm
This paper focuses on the processing of structural health monitoring (SHM) big data. Extracted features of a structure are reduced using an optimization algorithm to find a minimal subset of salient features by removing noisy, irrelevant and redundant data. The PSO-Harmony algorithm is introduced for feature selection to enhance the capability of the proposed method for processing the measure...
